bees die off

“Float like a butterfly, Sting like a bee.” Muhammad Ali

Unless you have been living under a rock this year…

SURELY you have heard that the honey bees are in serious danger of extinction. Sounds a little scary huh? Did you know that it is just not honey bees that are fighting to survive? Honey Bees are a small part of the bigger picture. The butterfly, bats, beetles of all kinds, birds and other MUCH NEEDED insects and animals are dying off at terrifying rates.  Who cares about some scary bugs? Did you know that caramel mocha smocha drink you love is in existence thanks to these creepy insects and animals? Yep, that’s right! Most of the food and drinks you love and survive on, are pollinated at some point it is creation and without this pollination service, your diet would significantly decrease in desirable items.

Who is responsible for this? Let me at ’em!

We now know that a class of pesticides are to blame, but most of us are unaware that WE are using these insecticides each and every day. How? Did you buy certified organic groceries this week? If not, you bought food grown with the use of these deadly insecticides.

Did you buy flowers for a loved one in the hospital? Yep, your guilty again. The flower industry uses 50X’s the amount of bee killing pesticides that BIG AG does. Crazy huh?

How about your local garden shop? These sneaky little devils are working to end humanity as we know it. Every product you buy from a local garden shop that is not certified organic, more than likely contains a toxic pesticide notorious for bee kill offs…. want to know the scariest part? You cant wash these insecticides off when you get home.

Trees, shrubs, flowers, seeds, bulbs, soil, compost…. i can go on for a while listing all the products you buy from local garden shops that contain deadly chemicals that are killing our pollinators..but i think you get the idea.

You can do something that matters. You can actually make a real difference in the future of pollination and our future food supply.

Are you serious about saving the honey bee?

Are you educated enough to know the serious consequences each and every human on this planet will face IF our pollinators perish?

Well, just don’t stand there…What are you doing about it?

Pick up the phone, call all of your local garden shops and make the BIG ASK!

Starting Jan 22, 2017 – Feb 22, 2017. People from all over the country are calling their local garden shops and making the BIG ASK.

Do a search in Google for: “name of your city” garden shops. Google will list most of the garden shops in your city. Remember to replace the words in parenthesis with the name of your city.    lol     🙂

Don’t bee shy. You can do this. It is simple as pie. Here are some sample things to ask for:

  1. Do you carry certified organic seeds?
  2. How much do your certified organic plants (trees, shrubs, tulips, flowers…) cost?
  3. When will your certified organic compost be in stock? How many can I order now?
  4.  What is your most popular certified organic soil you have in stock? Why?
  5.  When will you have certified organic live plants/flowers ready to purchase this Spring? Can you add my name and number to your call list?
  6. Do you carry certified organic plants? Say Thank you!!!!
  7. Do you spray neonicotinoids on your plants to protect them from insect bits/holes? If yes, educate them on why / how this is killing our local pollinators and please stop. You do not mind buying plants with a few bug bites in them.
  8. How many trees do you carry that are certified organic?
  9. Do you spray your trees with neonics?
  10. What is your local garden shop doing to promote Certified Organic products to help save pollinators?

Get creative! Keep it helpful, fun and positive.

Remember, some garden shops are not all that savvy with the long lasting insecticides being sprayed on their plants. Garden shops are trying to keep their business growing. They have sales on the brain, not saving humanity…saving the honey bee.

They have believed big AG and Big Pesticide manufacturers sales consultants who told them that neonics are safe for bees and in fact, neonics are far better than old school pesticides for pollinators.

I can tell you countless stories of “expert” gardeners who defend these pesticides with their very life. No matter what you say to convince them otherwise, they are completely enamored with their chemicals.

Me : “Can you explain to me what a neonicotinoid is?”

Expert Gardener : “a long lasting insecticide.”

Me : “How long does this insecticide last.?”

Expert Gardener ” it’s a miracle of science…can last up to 13 years!”

Me : “Do insecticides kill bees?”

Expert Gardener : “No, they only kill insects.”

We have all been there.  Making mistakes is part of the human experience. Until the rest of the world wakes up. WE need to step up and bee the voice of sanity.

Thank you for your time. Thank you for giving a damn about the world we call home. And THANK YOU for calling your local garden shops. This is one tiny step that can make HUGE WAVES of improvement for our little pollinators.
