Take Action: Plant Trees Now to Combat Climate Change

Why Start Planting Trees Now?

As a volunteer and worker for various charities over the past decade, I’ve seen millions of dollars funneled into “awareness” campaigns with little to no action. Despite these funds, many charities fail to address the core issues, leaving the burden of action on volunteers.

It’s time we take matters into our own hands and start planting trees ourselves. By planting trees, we can significantly impact air quality, combat climate change, and improve community health.

Steps to Plant Tree Cuttings Effectively

1. Timing:
– In June/July, visit BLM, or public lands to find under-watered or unfertilized trees. Its best to find these trees out in areas where city has not sprayed pesticides or using drip system to keep the tree alive.

2. Taking Cuttings:
– Collect healthy cuttings, no more than five per tree.

3. Preparing Cuttings:
– Remove most leaves and dip the ends in root hormone.

4. Planting Cuttings:
– Place the cuttings in a plastic cup or container with holes at the bottom. Use sand, soil and/or certified organic bag of soil.

5. Creating a Mini-Greenhouse:
– Water well, place two tall sticks on either side, and cover with transparent plastic.

6. Checking for Roots:
– Place the setup by a window for two weeks, then check for root growth.

7. Planting Outdoors:
– After 2-3 weeks, plant the cuttings outside and water once a week until fall. Share extras with neighbors.

Guerrilla Gardening Tips

If you lack space in your yard, consider guerrilla gardening. Plant trees anywhere you can find, using a gallon jug with holes to water daily. Hide it from the sun to prevent evaporation. Dedicate a few months of the year to this effort, and these trees will grow quickly without constant watering or toxic fertilizers. Aim to use native plants to support local ecosystems.

Importance of Action

Local air quality directly impacts our health. Poor air quality causes serious health problems, including respiratory issues and mental health problems. It’s crucial to improve air quality for the well-being of everyone in the community. Planting trees is a simple, effective way to make a positive environmental impact.

By taking direct action, we can make a significant difference. Start planting trees now, and encourage others to do the same. Together, we can create healthier, greener communities.
